Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that results in loss of memory and reasoning along with various other mental functions. Affecting around 417,000 people in the UK, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common of all types of dementia. The risk of developing the condition increases with age – specifically, one in five people aged over 80 years can expect to develop the disease, whilst only one in every thousand people aged under 65 years will develop the condition. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease vary from one individual to the next, but commonly include forgetfulness, confusion, speech problems and mood swings. As Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive or degenerative condition, its effects tend to worsen over time. In fact, the severe form of Alzheimer’s disease will feature symptoms such as complete memory loss, inability to swallow properly and increased vulnerability to infection. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition that tends to shorten life expectancy.
Genetic predisposition DNA testing for Alzheimer’s disease is important in order to screen for those who are most at risk of developing the condition. Further research at the genetic level may also lead to improved methods of treatment, which are currently limited to medications such as Donepezil and Memantine. Studies into Alzheimer’s disease are ongoing and the specific causes of the condition are not yet fully understood. However, a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease has been observed and categorised as familial Alzheimer’s disease or early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease. There is only a marginally increased chance (in comparison to the population average) that an individual will develop familial or inherited Alzheimer’s disease, which begins to show between the ages of 35 and 60.
