Newark has come a long way since the 1960s race riots which made it a dangerous place; it is now enjoying a renaissance.

The city’s ‘piece de resistance’ is the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre, where you can book to see national opera, dance, jazz and the national orchestra. There is also the ‘Rock’, or Prudential Centre, which has become the central point for sports and is also home to the New Jersey Devils Hockey team as well as hosting basketball games and concerts.

Jersey City’s crowning glory is the Statue of Liberty which is on the doorstep; there are also lots of great restaurants and an indie shopping circuit.

The top ten things to do in Jersey City are as follows, you have to see The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Number two on your list should be the Liberty Science Centre; it has an IMAX theatre, an I-beam to balance on 18 feet up and lots of interactive hands-on learning designed for all ages.

Paterson NJ was the original centre for industry in the USA and the Paterson Museum pays tribute to this fact. From paper production to manufacturing plane engines, the Rogers Company became the most ingenious locomotive engineering company in the US at the time. The Curtiss-Wright Corporation during World War II was the centre for production of engines. By 1920 the Wright Aeronautical Corporation built the Whirlwind and Cyclone aircraft engines, which made aeronautical history.  The museum is small but surprisingly good.
