Arizona is the perfect state for a road trip. It includes show-stopping sights such as Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and Cathedral Rock but it is the incredible scenery in-between these iconic places that really creates the magic of a road trip. Follow Route 66 into Flagstaff for ‘mom and pop’ friendliness. Take a twisting drive through Jerome or drive by the Native Americans at mesa-top Hopi villages which date back over 1000 years.

Take a stop off Highway 86 southeast of the Arizona-Sonora Desert to visit ‘Hollywood in the desert’. This old film set was built in 1939 for the filming westerns and it has been the setting for shoot-outs with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio. Tucson is a vibrant university town. Tucson is pronounced Too-sawn and is the most cultural city in the Southwest. This town has a rich Hispanic heritage and you’ll find good quality Mexican eateries, vintage shops and dive bars. Take a hike in the Saguaro National Park and watch the sunset over the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Phoenix is set in a vast valley and has a growing cultural scene, great sports facilities and a business-like appearance. The Phoenix art museum and the Desert Botanical Garden are a good introduction to the area’s flora and fauna. With over 300 days of sunshine, hence it’s nickname ‘Valley of the Sun’, there is more to Phoenix than meets the eye.

Close to Phoenix is Mesa, third largest city in Arizona and is found in the Maricopa County about 20 miles from Phoenix. There is a Golf and Splash centre for families and Mesa also hosts the Arizona Museum of Natural history.

Chandler is another city in the Maricopa County not far from Mesa. In 1891, Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona settled on a ranch just south of Mesa. He acquired 18,000 acres of land and drew up some plans for a town on a site that was known as the Chandler Ranch. It officially opened in 1912 and featured the Hotel San Marcos and the first golf resort in the state.

Glendale, Arizona is another city in Maricopa County and is about 9 miles from downtown Phoenix. Glendale calls itself ‘Arizona’s Antique capital’ and is also home to the popular Arrowhead Towne Center mall, Midwestern University and Phoenix’s first medical school as well as the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Scottsdale Arizona is in the eastern part of Maricopa County and is next to the greater Phoenix area. It was named after its founder, Winfield Scott in 1894. The New York Times described Scottsdale as a ‘desert version of Miami’s South Beach’ and as having ‘plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene’. The slogan here is the West’s ‘Most Western Town’.

Gilbert, Arizona is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona located southeast of Phoenix and was once known as the Hay shipping capital of the world. It is one of the fastest growing towns, increasing its population from 5,717 in 1980 to 208,453 in 2010. It is fairly well known for its Mormon population and there is a temple in Gilbert for this denomination. Gilbert was also recognised in 2010 as the 36th best place to live in the nation as well as among the top places to live and learn.
