Indiana is a slow-paced state that revs up around the Indy 500 race but on a day-to-day basis they enjoy pie eating, especially in the Amish Country, or meditating in Bloomington’s Tibetan Temples. Tourists can discover the fascinating big architecture in Columbus. Just so you know, locals are called ‘Hoosiers’ since way back in the 1830s and no one knows exactly why, possibly due to locals in the 19th century answering the door and saying ‘who’s there?’.

Indianapolis is the state capital it’s the best place to have a closer look at race cars and have a whizz round the famous speedway. If you’re a fan of famous author Kurt Vonnegut there is plenty of literary history  if you follow the cultural trail accessible on foot or by cycle which connects the city’s downtown cultural districts, it includes bike rentals/drop offs and local artwork. Monument Circle is placed at the centre of Indianapolis and is marked by the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ monument.  At Christmas the Monument is decorated with lights and looks very festive, each season the lights are lit in a ceremony known as Circle of Lights, which attracts many sightseers and locals alike the day after Thanksgiving. Interestingly the night Martin Luther King was assassinated one of the few states that did not see mass rioting was Indianapolis and this was, some say, partly due to Robert Kennedy who was campaigning for President at the time and made a very effective speech which calmed tensions in the city.

Fort Wayne, Indiana is the state’s second largest city and a three time ‘All America City’ Award winner. It is named after General ‘Mad’ Anthony Wayne who established the fort at the meeting point of three rivers. Today it is a thriving metropolis and many people flock here to live as it has such a good standard of living.

Evansville, Indiana is the commercial, medical and cultural hub of the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky tri-state area. It is the third largest city in the state and has plenty to do. Also known as the River city, take some time to walk riverside where you’ll find bars and restaurants, one to try is an Irish Bar, RiRa’s, which also serves food. The Mesker Park Zoo and botanical gardens and the Ford Centre would also be a safe bet for entertainment and local interest value. Evansville also is home to an archaeological phenomenon called The Angel Mounds which was a permanent settlement of Mississippian culture back in 1000AD. Overall, you are gently advised to step down the pace and enjoy what the state of Indiana has to offer up and you will not be disappointed.
