Graves’ Disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism, which refers to increased activity of the thyroid gland. Located in the neck, the thyroid gland produces hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine, that control the body’s growth, metabolism, heart rate and body temperature. Hyperthyroidism will often result in hyperactivity, increased appetite and a dramatic change in weight – either a loss or gain. Although Graves’ disease can affect both men and women of all ages, it most commonly develops in women aged over 20 years. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, which develops when the condition stimulates the thyroid gland excessively. Common symptoms of Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism include anxiety, male breast enlargement, exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs), fatigue, goitre, increased sweating, insomnia, menstrual problems, palpitations and shortness of breath.
Genetic predisposition DNA testing for Graves’ disease is fundamental to understanding how and why the condition develops. Current research has demonstrated that a genetic predisposition to Graves’ disease is evident in many sufferers although the specific genetic factors at work are not fully understood at the present time. DNA testing Graves’ disease has identified four specific thyroid antigens in thyroglobulin, thyroid peroxidase, sodium-iodide symporter and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor. It has been established that the TSH receptor is the main autoantigen of Graves’ disease, whilst the disorder is also influenced and controlled by B and T lymphocytes. Numerous other genetic factors mediate Graves’ disease, so it is difficult to determine the precise balance between its genetic and environmental causes, however, it is thought that 5% of people with thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins will develop hyperthyroidism in their lifetime.
