Coronary Heart Disease refers to a condition whereby the arteries supplying blood to the heart become blocked, either wholly or in part, by fatty deposits known as atheroma, which typically include waste substances such as cholesterol and calcium. An excessive build up of atheroma on the arterial walls narrows the space through which blood can be supplied to the heart, which has the obvious consequence of reducing or restricting blood flow – a condition that is known as atherosclerosis. The primary symptom of coronary heart disease is temporary chest pain that can be treated in the majority of cases. However, if blood flow to the heart is completely restricted, a heart attack will often occur, which may result in extreme pain, unconsciousness and even death. Coronary heart disease can affect people of all ages, but is most common in those aged over 75. Current research suggests some 2.6 million people suffer from the condition in the UK.
It is hoped that genetic predisposition DNA testing for coronary heart disease will result in improved mechanisms by which the condition is diagnosed and treated. Although coronary heart disease is known to be caused by environmental factors such as diets comprising high cholesterol levels, obesity and tobacco smoking, internal conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also play a significant role in its development. Discovering a genetic predisposition to coronary heart disease would prove invaluable for early diagnosis and treatment. At the present, the most effective indicator of a predisposition to the disease is through analysis of family history and refinement with DNA testing.
