Bladder Cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the UK, affecting around 10,000 new patients every year. There are five main types or categories of bladder cancer: Transitional Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Bladder Cancer, Adenocarcinoma of the bladder, non-invasive Bladder Cancer and muscle invasive Bladder Cancer. Transitional Cell Carcinoma accounts for up to 90% of all instances of bladder cancer, whilst in respect to how far the disease has spread, 70% of cases involve non-invasive bladder cancer (that which has not spread beyond the lining of the bladder). Whichever type or classification of bladder cancer an individual may experience, its symptoms will very often include hematuria, which is the presence of blood in the urine, in addition to an increased frequency with which urine is passed. A painful burning sensation may also be experienced. In the UK, around 5,000 people die from bladder cancer each year.

Genetic predisposition DNA testing bladder cancer is useful in order to screen candidates who are considered most likely to develop the condition. DNA testing bladder cancer is also important in establishing the precise mechanisms behind the disease in order to provide improved methods of diagnosis and treatment. Although a genetic predisposition to bladder cancer has been established through research, it is thought that environmental factors play the biggest role in the development of the disease by modifying genes such as Rb and erbB-2, which control cell proliferation and growth respectively. Smoking accounts for up to 65% of bladder cancers in men and 30% in women.
