Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a happy and affectionate dog who is always eager and willing to please. They get along well with both people and other pets and their easy going nature is reflected in their growing popularity. They also make excellent companion dogs for the elderly and medical patients.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were born to be companions but they still hold the sporty demeanor like their spaniel ancestors. They are an athletic breed that loves hiking and running on the beach but also loves belly rubs and sitting on your lap.

They are extremely people-oriented and will follow their owners everywhere – even straight to the bathroom. Cavaliers love companionship. Because of this, they do best when they have someone to hang out with during the day. They are an inside dog through and through and will not do well being left outside.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent and generally do well with training – eager to try whatever you’d like them to. They have a soft personality and respond best to food rewards and positive reinforcements. If left without proper training this breed is known to display some behavioral problems. They can also have issues with housetraining, as most toy breeds do. Though they may bark at strangers at the door, they are not good guard dogs due to their friendly personality.

Major Health Concerns: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can often suffer from some serious genetic health problems including early-onset mitral valve disease. They are also prone to hip dysplasia, luxating patellas and various vision and hearing disorders.

Interesting Fact: King Charles Spaniels were interbred with Pugs to get the modern day Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
