American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo, or Eskie, is a fun loving, lively dog. These dogs are found to be very intelligent, obedient and willing to please. They enjoy human companionship, attention, cold weather, running and barking.

Eskies are extremely smart. In fact, they are so smart they are considered one of the most intelligent breeds. They are independent thinkers, meaning they could be difficult to train so early training is recommended. If left to their own devices, they will easily outsmart you. They also have a knack for problem-solving.

Though smaller in size, the Eskie thinks big. They are great watchdogs and will bark at strangers – so much so that can be problem barkers if left alone for too long. They are initially wary of strangers but will warm up in time. They are not overly aggressive, though.

Eskies are also chewers and require an endless supply of chew toys to keep from chewing on unwanted things, like your shoes. They are affectionate and cheerful and do very well with children, dogs, and even cats. They like to be busy, though, especially when they are young. Adequate exercise is required to keep an Eskie from becoming bored. They also enjoy human companionship and do not like to be alone for long periods of time.

Major Health Concerns: The American Eskimo a relatively healthy breed but occasionally suffers from knee problems. This breed tends to become overweight easily, so proper diet and exercise is needed to maintain an overall well-being.

Interesting Fact: There are three size varieties of the American Eskimo breed, the toy, miniature and the standard. They share a common resemblance with Japanese Spitz and Samoyed dog.
